1. Booth Lake Trail

Tucked within the Eagle’s Nest Wilderness, this 8.8-mile out-and-back trail showcases stunning waterfall scenery in the Colorado Rockies. Your hiking journey will begin with a steep climb through aspen groves, which are painted in vibrant autumn hues during the fall. The highlight of the hike is setting your sights on the impressive 60-foot Booth Falls. Beyond the waterfalls, the trail passes through wildflower meadows and forests, ascending above 10,000 feet for stunning views of the Gore Range.

Important: Plan to shuttle to all of these trailheads. At most of these trails, there is no parking available and at others it is very limited. Check out this Bus to Hike It map before going!

2. Pitkin Lake Trail

Embark on a challenging 9.5-mile out-and-back hike to Pitkin Lake. The first mile climbs steeply out of the Vail Valley, with fallen trees marking past avalanches. As the grade eases, the trail winds through spruce-fir forest and ancient glacial moraines. Around 2.5 miles in, the first of two waterfalls along Pitkin Creek is revealed. Higher up, the path climbs through rugged alpine terrain, passing false summits before reaching Pitkin Lake.

3. Upper Piney River Falls Trail

Explore a scenic 5.9-mile out-and-back trail that leads to a beautiful cascading waterfall. Starting from the edge of Piney River Ranch, the moderately challenging trail offers astonishing views of Piney Lake and the towering Gore Range. Hikers can enjoy peaceful creek crossings, spot wildlife, and find great picnic spots.
